Who we are
Black History X (blackhistoryx.org) is run by its two founders, who together decide how personal data on this site is used. You can reach us about anything in this policy at admin@blackhistoryx.org.
Where we are with this
We are a small team and we are bringing this site fully in line with UK data protection law. We would rather tell you where we are than pretend it is finished. Right now, some Google analytics and advertising scripts can load before you answer our cookie banner. We know about it and we are fixing it. This policy describes how the site will work once that fix is in, and we will update the date above when it is.
What we collect, and why
Email sign-ups. If you join our mailing list, we keep your email address and anything else you enter on the form. We use it to send you the monthly proverb and BHX news. Our list is run by Kit (kit.com). Our basis is your consent. You can unsubscribe from any email with one click.
The shop. Our shop at shop.blackhistoryx.org is run by Fourthwall, which takes your order, payment and delivery details under its own privacy policy. We never see your card details. We can see your name and delivery address in Fourthwall’s dashboard, so we can help with any problem with your order. Our basis is fulfilling your order.
Accounts and comments. If you register or leave a comment, we keep what you enter, along with your IP address, to run your account and stop spam. Our basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the site working and secure.
How you use the site. With your consent, we use Google Analytics to see which stories people read and how they find us.
Advertising. With your consent, Google AdSense shows ads here and may use cookies to make them more relevant to you.
Tracked links. Some of our links go through go.blackhistoryx.org, so we can see how many clicks come from each place we share them. This records the click and general details such as country and device type.
Hosting. The site is hosted by Hostinger, whose servers keep standard technical logs, such as IP addresses, for security.
You can withdraw consent at any time, through the cookie banner or by emailing us.
Cookies
You choose which cookies to allow on our cookie banner, and you can change that choice at any time through the banner or our Cookie Policy. See “Where we are with this” above for the current position.
Affiliate links
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Some links on this site are Amazon affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Amazon may set cookies of its own.
Embedded content
Our stories include YouTube videos and content from other sites. These behave as if you had visited that site directly, and those sites may collect data about you under their own policies.
Who we share data with
Only the services named above: Google, Kit, Fourthwall, Amazon and Hostinger. Some of them store data outside the UK, under the safeguards UK law requires. We do not sell your personal data.
How long we keep it
Mailing list details: until you unsubscribe. Comments and accounts: until you ask us to delete them. Analytics: for the limited period set in Google Analytics.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, or ask us to correct it, delete it, restrict it, or stop using it. Email admin@blackhistoryx.org.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, email admin@blackhistoryx.org. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days and tell you what we are doing about it. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Do Not Track
This site does not respond to browser Do Not Track signals. Use our cookie banner to control tracking.
Changes
When we change this policy, we update the date at the top.
